Way Up North

Leftover Landscape

From 3 or 4 years ago (when I had a proper studio)

Some thoughts that have occurred to me while painting:
  1. I almost always get something done when I go to the studio.
  2. When I’m painting I don’t consciously think about influences.
  3. I always listen to music while I paint and it probably influences what I do.
  4. Some of the best stuff happens quickly and sometimes the first gestural take is all that it should be, and it’s time to stop. Other times I “work it.”
  5. I know I’ve done something good when I don’t care what anyone else might think.

laissez-faire aesthetics

Per Jed Perl - at least Pop Art and "Bad" Painting of a while back were "self-consciously ironic" and the artists
"...were mocking something. They had a target. This is what has now changed. Laissez-faire aesthetics now makes a mockery of nothing. Even irony is too much of an idea."

Well said.

art crap

Trends ought to be be tangential to one's tendencies, but tend to try one's turpitude.

Country Keening/Kent Lament

What's more profound
than the ominous sound
of the owl's late report,
Against the still, yet shrill,
the incessant trill
of insects in the dark?

[Cue coyote chorus.]

I like the repeated realization that paintings and drawings I think of as old are only from 3-4 years ago. Germination took decades, but real progress has only just begun. The sky is limitless.
Cardboard is a cool medium; I politely take what it gives me.
